ABOUT OLIVER JR

Bringing Charles Dickens’ beloved novel to life, Lionel Bart’s Oliver! takes audiences on a wild adventure through Victorian England. Join young, orphaned Oliver Twist as he navigates London's underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and - most importantly - for love. When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger, he is welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, but charismatic, Fagin. When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, he is rescued by a kind and wealthy gentleman, to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sikes. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy, who is trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results. With spirited, timeless songs like “As Long as He Needs Me,” “Food, Glorious Food,” and “Where Is Love,” Oliver! is a musical classic.

ROLES AND CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Mr. Bumble
Mr. Bumble runs the workhouse where Oliver begins the show. He is cold, cruel, and completely unconcerned about the boys under his care. Cast a good actor and decent singer who reads older onstage and pairs well with Widow Corney.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: Bb2–F4

Widow Corney
Widow Corney helps run the workhouse alongside Mr. Bumble. She is calculating, cold, and focused only on keeping the institution profitable. Cast a good actor and singer who works naturally with Mr. Bumble.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: B3–Eb5

Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist is the young orphan at the center of the story. Intelligent and kind, Oliver longs for family and belonging while trying to survive the dangers of London. Ideally Oliver reads young onstage, but a strong singer with emotional sincerity and stage presence is most important.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: A3–E5

Mr. Sowerberry
Mr. Sowerberry is the undertaker who purchases Oliver from Mr. Bumble. He treats Oliver poorly and should pair naturally with Mrs. Sowerberry.
Gender: Male

Mrs. Sowerberry
Mrs. Sowerberry gives Oliver scraps left for the dog and cares little for his well-being. Cast an actor who pairs naturally with Mr. Sowerberry.
Gender: Female

Charlotte
Charlotte works for the Sowerberrys. Though slightly kinder than the others, she still does not treat Oliver warmly. This is a good role for a newer performer.
Gender: Female

Noah Claypole
Noah Claypole works for the Sowerberrys and intentionally insults Oliver’s mother to provoke him. Noah should read older than Oliver and have strong stage presence.
Gender: Male

Artful Dodger
The Artful Dodger, also known as Jack Dawkins, is one of the most famous characters in literature. He is charming, charismatic, upbeat, and immediately welcomes Oliver into Fagin’s gang. Cast a terrific actor and singer who commands the stage with confidence and energy.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: A3–E5

Fagin
Fagin recruits and manages a gang of child thieves. Though he calls the children “my dear,” his real focus is the money they bring him. Cast a charismatic actor and strong singer who can balance humor, charm, and manipulation.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: C3–G4

Charlie Bates
Charlie Bates is one of Fagin’s young thieves and greatly admires the Artful Dodger. This is a fun featured role requiring a good actor and singer.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: G4–B4

Nipper
Nipper is the smallest member of Fagin’s gang. This role includes a small solo but no lines, making it ideal for a smaller performer with vocal confidence.
Gender: Any | Vocal range: A3–E4

Captain
Captain is one of the children in Fagin’s gang. The role includes a small solo, so cast a performer comfortable singing independently.
Gender: Any | Vocal range: B3–A4

Handwalker
Handwalker is another child in Fagin’s gang with a featured solo moment. Choose a performer with confidence and strong musicality.
Gender: Any | Vocal range: D4–B4

Nancy
Nancy is adventurous, compassionate, and one of the emotional hearts of the show. Though she has fallen into a dangerous life, she immediately cares for Oliver and tries to protect him. Cast a fantastic actress and strong singer capable of emotional depth and bold stage presence.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: G3–E5

Bet
Bet is Nancy’s spirited friend who shares her adventurous personality and loyalty. Cast a reliable singer and mover who works naturally with Nancy.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: A3–D5

Mr. Brownlow
Mr. Brownlow is a kind man who takes Oliver in after Oliver accidentally becomes involved in a robbery. This caring role is ideal for a strong actor who can convey warmth and compassion.
Gender: Male

Bill Sikes
Bill Sikes is the show’s primary villain: selfish, ruthless, paranoid, and violent. He intimidates everyone around him, especially Nancy. Cast a strong actor and steady singer who can create a truly threatening presence onstage.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: B2–D4

Chairman
The Chairman appears in the Three Cripples Public House. Though small, the role is important to the storytelling and should be cast with someone who projects clearly and speaks with strong diction.
Gender: Male

Mrs. Bedwin
Mrs. Bedwin is Mr. Brownlow’s kindhearted housekeeper. This featured role works well for a performer who reads older onstage and sings confidently.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: C4–B4

Milkmaid
The Milkmaid helps create the bustling world of London and includes a featured solo. These featured seller roles are excellent opportunities for younger performers ready for a brief spotlight moment.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: Eb4–C5

Strawberry Seller
Another featured London seller role with a solo moment and strong character opportunities.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: Eb4–Eb5

Knife Grinder
The Knife Grinder helps bring the London marketplace to life and includes a featured vocal line.
Gender: Male | Vocal range: Bb2–G3

Rose Seller
The Rose Seller is another featured market role with a solo and expressive character opportunities.
Gender: Female | Vocal range: Bb3–Ab4

Dr. Grimwig
Dr. Grimwig is intelligent, skeptical, and pessimistic, often contrasting Mr. Brownlow’s optimism. This is a strong featured acting role for a performer comfortable portraying an older character.
Gender: Male

Old Sally
Old Sally helps reveal Oliver’s true family connection. This featured acting role requires strong line delivery and clarity.
Gender: Female

Matron
The Matron also helps reveal Oliver’s past and should be played by an actor with strong diction and stage confidence.
Gender: Female

Ensemble
The large ensemble fills out the world of Oliver Jr and includes children, workhouse governors, servants, pauper assistants, Fagin’s gang, market sellers, London crowds, policemen, customers, passersby, and more. These ensemble groups are critical for creating the atmosphere of Dickensian London and provide extensive opportunities for student involvement.
